Janu Tokyo
Aman's social sibling — 4,000sqm of wellness for people who like people
Editor’s Take
The wellness center is accessible to non-hotel-guests via membership and day passes — enquire directly. The Saturday morning martial arts class followed by poolside brunch is the insider move.
About
Janu exists because Aman recognised a paradox in its own success: the world's most devoted luxury hospitality brand had optimised so completely for tranquility that it had designed out human connection. Janu — Sanskrit for "soul" — is the correction. Placed in Azabudai Hills, Tokyo's most ambitious new development, it brings 4,000 square metres of wellness space that is explicitly designed for social energy. The wellness center is extraordinary by any standard. A 25-metre pool with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Minato. A thermal suite spanning sauna, steam room, ice bath, and vitality pools. A gym that rivals standalone fitness clubs. But the differentiator is programming: group martial arts classes, communal yoga sessions, guided meditation circles, and dance workshops create structured reasons for guests and members to interact. The instructors are world-class — former competitive athletes, meditation teachers with decades of practice — and the classes attract a crowd that takes participation seriously. The social architecture extends beyond the wellness center. The hotel's restaurants and bars are designed as gathering spaces, not hushed fine-dining temples. Weekend wellness brunches combine movement classes with shared meals. The pool deck on warm days becomes a scene — the kind of relaxed, high-quality social environment where conversations start naturally. At Janu, the wellness and the socialising aren't separate activities; they're the same thing.
