Hammam de la Mosquée de Paris
Paris's oldest hammam — timeless, communal, €30
Editor’s Take
Women-only and men-only sessions alternate — check the schedule before going. The gommage is worth the extra €20. Skip the restaurant inside the mosque (tourist trap) but never skip the courtyard tea.
About
There is no hammam in Paris with more soul than the one tucked inside the Grande Mosquée in the 5th arrondissement. Operating since 1926, the year the mosque itself opened, it has outlasted every wellness trend by simply refusing to change. The tiled steam rooms are hot, the gommage scrubs are vigorous, and the mint tea served in the Moorish courtyard afterwards is among the best things you can drink in Paris for €3. The experience is refreshingly unmediated. No app, no membership tier, no branded robe. You pay €30 at the door, collect your towel, and enter a world of eucalyptus steam and echoing tile. The gommage — a full-body scrub with black soap and a coarse kessa glove — is performed by attendants who have been doing this for decades. It's not gentle. You will emerge feeling like a new person. The hot room, warm room, and cold plunge follow the traditional hammam sequence that has worked for centuries. What makes it a social wellness landmark is the courtyard ritual that follows. Wrapped in towels, visitors settle into the mosaic-tiled courtyard for mint tea and honey pastries beneath fig trees. Conversations start easily here — between regulars who come weekly, tourists who stumbled in from the Jardin des Plantes, and everyone in between. At 1,000 visitors a week, it's arguably the most democratic social wellness space in Europe.
